📎 Missing an IRCC Document? Read This First

If a required IRCC document is missing from your application and you simply ignore it, you are taking a serious risk.

If a required IRCC document is missing from your application and you simply ignore it, you are taking a serious risk. IRCC is very clear: when a required document is missing, your application can be delayed, returned as incomplete, or refused. Leaving an upload field empty or submitting without any explanation relies on the officer to “guess” your situation—and that is rarely a safe strategy. If you genuinely cannot obtain a document on time, you can usually upload a combined file (letter of explanation plus proof) in that document slot, using an accepted file format. In your letter, briefly explain what is missing, why you cannot provide it yet, and what you have done to obtain it. Attach supporting proof, such as a payment receipt, appointment confirmation, email correspondence with an authority, or courier/tracking details that show the delay is real and beyond your control. This does not guarantee your file will be accepted as complete—the officer will still decide whether your explanation is reasonable for your program and situation. Every application is different, and missing items like police certificates, medicals, passport pages, translations, employment records, or civil status documents can have very different consequences. If IRCC has requested a document or you know you will need to submit with something missing, getting qualified guidance before you upload your explanation can help you avoid unnecessary risk.
