📄 VOS, Replacement, or Amendment: Know the Difference

Lost an immigration document? Found an error on your permit? The next step is not always obvious—and choosing the wrong IRCC process can slow everything down.

Lost an immigration document? Found an error on your permit? The next step is not always obvious—and choosing the wrong IRCC process can slow everything down. Verification of Status (VOS), replacement, and amendment are three different IRCC processes, and they are not interchangeable. A replacement is generally used when a valid permit (for example, a work or study permit) was lost, stolen, or destroyed and you need another copy of the same document. A VOS is a plain‑paper confirmation of your current or past immigration status, often used when historical records such as a Record of Landing or Confirmation of Permanent Residence are missing and you need proof of status history. An amendment is usually used when IRCC made an error on certain valid documents, such as a misspelled name or incorrect date of birth. Before applying, it is important to confirm whether your document is still valid, whether it was actually lost or destroyed, whether you need proof of historical status, and who made the error on the document. In some situations, none of these options will be appropriate and you may need a new immigration application instead. Using the wrong process or form can lead to delays or returned applications, so taking a few minutes to assess your situation carefully can save time later. ATA Immigration can review your documents and help you understand whether a VOS, replacement, amendment, or a new application is likely more appropriate for your situation. Our guidance is focused on helping you choose a pathway that aligns with IRCC’s rules and your specific circumstances. 🧾 Learn more about Canadian immigration documents and processes: https://www.ataimmigration.com/immigration-canada 📚 Need clarity on your permit or status history issue?
